Why should you use a broker at all? Can't you just buy or sell your own business yourself? Of course you can.

We have expertise. The volume of business we deal with and the frequency of our transactions give us the advantage of economies of scale. We have methods, algorithms, forms, spreadsheets, etc. that we've accumulated and developed over a much longer timeframe than a single transaction spans. We know generally (and often specifically) who buys the type of business you're trying to sell and who sells the type of business you're trying to buy. We've been through numerous closings and have a well-worn checklist of things that are easily forgotten the first time around.
We have the time. This is our day job. We've structured our lives around saving other people time. Delegating your purchase or sale to a broker allows you to hold onto your time for other things, like working, investing, spending time with your family, or just taking a break for once.
